important note allocating payments that have been entered manually into the system is important for ensuring that patient's accounts are up to date note payments that come in via era will either auto allocate or need to be dealt with in a separate workflow if the payer payment covers only one patient, you can work from the patient's ledger if the payment covers multiple patients and you would like to allocate to all of those patients at once, you should work from the practice ledger when you enter the payment/eob into the system, the allocate payment screen automatically appears once you post the payment/eob you can allocate the payment there following steps 6 8 below if you choose not to allocate the payment immediately after posting it but want to come back to it later, start with step 1 1\ navigate to practice ledger 2\ click the era/eob tab 3\ click the eob you’d like to allocate 4\ select allocate payment note if the payment could apply to a number of patients, you will need to choose the name of the patient(s) from the patient dropdown the list of patients in the dropdown includes patients who use this insurance as well as any other payers in its payer group, if any for example, if this payment came from bcbs of california, and you have put bcbs of california in a payer group with other bcbs payers, the patients of all of those payers might show up in this dropdown 5\ locate the appropriate charge(s) 6\ enter the amount in the payer alloc box in the charge line in this example, the payer has paid some, but not all, of the charge, and the patient still owes some money we have $44 50 to allocate note if the line does not balance correctly, some boxes will be outlined in red information about the error can be seen on the screen in this case, we have a secondary payer and can enter any amount that is unpaid from the original amount into the secondary payer owed boxes 7\ click allocate
